FLESS Mission Statement
:: GOALS ::
The primary responsibility of School District No. 91
(Nechako Lakes) is to provide all learners a solid academic core program consisting of language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. All students will have opportunities to meet provincial graduation requirements and become prepared for entry into the workplace or post-secondary studies. The Board has a further responsibility to ensure that all students understand the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, and have the skills and disposition to pursue learning throughout life.
The Board recognizes that technology is a tool to help achieve all goals of our organization. Uses of technology should enhance student learning and create more efficient and effective management services.
The Board of School Trustees, School District No. 91
(Nechako Lakes), recognizes the importance of endorsing the work schools have undertaken in pursuit of their specific goals. To this end, the Board of School Trustees will continue its focus on, and support of, the following six goals during the 2001/02 school year:
1. STUDENT VERIFIED LEARNING - Teachers and school administrators are encouraged to examine the results of what they do in their classrooms and in their schools in terms of the impact on students' learning. If students are not achieving expected outcomes, it is essential that we teach in ways that will allow all students to be successful. The Board of School Trustees believes that tangible, measurable results are key to school improvement and will continue to support school and district 'data driven' initiatives that positively impact students' learning;
2. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY - The very basis of how we work together in society must be built on a foundation of mutual respect. It is only by creating a culture in our schools that values student leadership and social responsibility that we will be able to realize our mission. The Board of School Trustees supports the efforts of teachers, support staff, administrators, parents and students in creating and maintaining effective behavior systems which model and teach respect for all;
3. FINE ARTS - The importance of supporting all learners as well as the richness and rewards gained through fine arts have been well documented through research. Schools will be encouraged to focus on specific fine arts initiatives which capitalize on existing staff expertise as well as showcase the talent in each school body;
4. CRITICAL THINKING - Critical thinking is a multi-dimensional process that involves decoding, analyzing, processing, reasoning, and evaluating information. It is also an attitude which demonstrates a learner's willingness to explore, probe, question, and search out answers and solutions. The Board recognizes that critical thinking is the foundation of all problem solving and must become a priority as our graduates prepare to meet and overcome the challenges of the 21st century.
5. COMMUNICATION - Public education is a very public enterprise that involves the community in a number of important ways. The work of the Board is to engage its communities in support of student achievement. The Board will work with schools to develop and implement strategies that will build effective communications, and community involvement.
6. EQUITY - As School District No. 91 (Nechako Lakes) moves into the new millennium, the Board of School Trustees will continue to work towards resourcing all schools in a fair manner so schools can work with their communities to meet the education mandate – enabling all learners to meet their individual potential.
:: VISION ::
Our graduates will be self-confident, socially responsible learners ready to meet and overcome the challenges of the 21st century.
