Steps for the Spelling unit!

  1. read the Feature (think about what you already know)
  2. read the Specific Focus (think about examples you already know)
  3. carefully read the lesson 'in short' provided (you will need to explain this to your teacher)
  4. go to as many lessons as you need until you fully understand your spelling focus
  5. go to your Spelling City list, read the top carefully
  6. read and listen to each word on the list (think about how each word uses your spelling rule)
  7. complete any practices and tests provided until you are confident that you are able to 'teach me' your focus and apply it successfully in your daily writing
  8. if you are still unsure about your spelling rule or lesson, ask your teacher for a mini-lesson
  9. when ready, write the test on Spelling City, if 100%, run it off and keep it (if needed, copy and paste onto a word document and then run it off)
  10. complete the assigned 'word work' activity in your spelling notebook
  11. when you are ready to be tested, bring your Spelling City test and your word work with you to use to help 'teach' your teacher
  12. * remember, it is not the word list that it important, it is understanding the spelling rule!

Spelling Lessons 'In Short'

Alphabet: (Consonants + Vowels) the alphabet is made up of two types of letters, consonants and vowels. There are five vowels (a, e, i, o, u), twenty-one consonants (b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z). The one exception is that 'y' is sometimes a vowel and sometimes a consonant.

Short Vowel sounds: 'a' as in cat, 'e' as in pet, 'i' as in pin, 'o' as in hot, 'u' as in cut

Y: is a consonant when it is at the beginning of a word e.g. yellow; it is a vowel when it is the only vowel (e.g. gym or cry) or when it is at the end of a word e.g. bunny

Long Vowel sounds: say their own name e.g. the 'a' sound in 'name'

Vowel Digraphs: two vowels together that make one sound e.g. rain; harder vowel digraphs include 'oo' (look, broom), 'ou' (tough, cough), 'ea' (bread), 'ei' (weigh); 'au' (taught)

Other Vowel Sounds 1 : sometimes a vowel sound is controlled by consonant e.g. you hear the short 'o' sound in the following combinations (al, aw, au, wa, ough)

Other Vowel Sounds 1 : sometimes a vowel sound is controlled by consonant e.g. you hear the short 'o' sound in the following combinations (al, aw, au, wa, ough)

Consonant Blends : two or more consonants are together and you hear each consonant sound (e.g. 'sm' as in smell, 'fl' as in flip, 'mp' as in bump,'tr' as in train, 'dr' as in drip, 'sl' as in sled, st as in stop)

Consonant Digraphs: two consonants together that make one sound e.g. this, what, chip, pick, she

Complex Consonants:

soft c and soft g: sometimes, consonants 'c' and 'g' make non-traditional sounds e.g. soft sounds as in cycle, gentle; there are three vowels that will cause these soft sounds (when an 'i', 'e' or 'y' follow the 'c' or the 'g', they make their soft sound

other complex combinations
- 'tch' makes a 'ch' sound

- 'dge' make a 'dj' sound because the 'e' makes the 'g' soft
- 'scr' you hear all three consonants
- 'kn' the 'k' is silent
- 'squ' you hear three sounds (remember, the 'u' always comes after a 'q'

Contractions: a shortened version of a group of words, usually formed by replacing a letter by an apostrophe (e.g. I am = I'm) Note:
