Text Box: Principal’s Message
Welcome Back!
I hope everyone was able to spend some time hanging out with kids over the break. As we head back to school after the break it is very important to make sure your kids continue to get lots of sleep (tough to do now that it's light so late!) so that they are coming school well rested and on time every day. These last 2 1/2 months are packed with learning activities so buckle up and hang on for the ride!

One activity of special note is that Ms. West and Ms. Mills will be coordinating a walk to raise awareness about diabetes. We will be collecting pledges and raising money to contribute to ongoing efforts aimed at addressing the growing concern about the increase of the number of cases of diabetes in Canadian youth. Rumor has it that someone will pledge to have the hair shaved from his head if enough money is pledged for the cause. Stay tuned for further details.
In conjunction with this event we have arranged for the health nurse to give classroom presentations on healthy eating. Ms. Roming will be visiting classes during the next two weeks telling us about which foods are good for us to eat. She will be asking students to show what they have in their lunches in order to provide examples of healthy food. Watch for notes about this event from the classroom teachers.

Once again, welcome back to the final term and I hope you have a wonderful week.

Sincerely,

Mr. Guy Epkens-Shaffer

Jeans Day 2006

All over B. C. on Thursday, April 27th, people will be participating in Jeans Day.  This is a fund raising activity for the B. C. Children’s Hospital.  In 2005, there were 112 children from Burns Lake who used the services provided by the B.C. Children’s Hospital.  Our school has 100 Jeans Day buttons to sell and this year each child who buys a $5.00 button will also receive a hockey card.  Buttons are available from Mrs. Howett or at the office.  Wear your jeans and a button to school on April 27th.

School Registration

We would like to remind parents that they still have time to register their child for Kindergarten (2006-2007 school year).  We have room in both the regular and French Immersion Kindergarten programs. Please remember to bring your child’s BC Care Card and Birth Certificate when you come in to register.  Any parents with children already attending Muriel Mould who are planning to move before the next school year should also be stopping in at the office to let us know.

Scholastic Book Fair

We will be holding the last book fair of the school year from Tuesday, May 9th to Thursday, May 11th.  The fair will be open from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm each day.  It is at this book fair that each child (if they have handed in a reading log) will receive a free book – compliments of our very generous P.A.C.!

PLEASE COME OUT AND SUPPORT YOUR SCHOOL LIBRARY!

Just a reminder to parents that there are staff and students who have allergies to perfume.  Please do not send your children to school with strong perfume or sprays.

School Photos

Class and panorama photographs will be taken on Tuesday, May 16th, 2006.  Class pictures will be delivered approximately 3 weeks after the pictures are taken.  Each student will receive a free picture of their class.

Power Outages

When there is a power outage, the first thing we do at MMPS is make sure that all the children are safe.  Next we try to get an accurate picture of how long the power disruption is likely to last.  If it looks like a lengthy outage we consider making arrangements for students to be sent home.  While we regret the loss of instructional time, we send children home because fire alarm systems, public address systems, and heating systems all require power.  In the absence of such safety systems we contact parents, and make arrangements with them to send their children to safe locations.  If we cannot contact some parents to make alternative arrangements students will be kept at school until the end of the regular day and go home in the regular manner.  Students that stay at the school will not have regular classes and are likely to be grouped in a central location.  Teachers and other staff members remain on duty throughout these disruptions to supervise the remaining students and to ensure their safety.  Service outages, like the days our buses don’t run due to road conditions, can be an opportunity for those students who remain in school to get more individual attention from their teachers. Recently there have been a number of power disruptions in and around the Burns Lake area.  Please take the time to make sure the school has all your contact numbers in case of an emergency.
