Text Box: Principal’s Message
As we head into the last week of school before spring break it seems like a good time to encourage all of you to spend lots of time hanging out with your kids over the break. One of the most enjoyable ways that I find of doing this is to sit down in a comfortable place and read together. All the research done around reading shows that this is one of the most effective ways to build reading skills in young children. Also, it is just plain fun.

Of course, this is the time of year when our second term report cards go home. In fact, they are going home with kids today so please be watching for them. If you would like to discuss your child’s progress with the teacher please call the school to schedule an appointment. Teachers would be happy to give you some suggestions of activities that you might want to try with your kids over the two week break.

Again, my thanks to all of you who do so much for our kids. I hope you have a relaxing and enjoyable break.

Sincerely,

Mr. Guy Epkens-Shaffer

Kindergarten Registration (regular program and French Immersion)

The kindergarten registration for the 2006-2007 school year will take place the week of March 27th - March  31st   from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm for the Monday, and 8:30 am to 4:00 pm for the rest of the week.  A child must be 5 years old or going to be 5 by December 31, 2006 to be eligible to start             kindergarten in September of 2006. Each child coming to register must be accompanied by an adult.  A        birth certificate and care card are required to complete the registration. Immunization and hearing tests must be done prior to starting school. To set up an appointment for immunization and hearing           tests, call the Northern Interior Health unit at 692-2460.  To assist us in staffing for this coming        September, it is imperative that you register your child for the school year.  Please note that there is a limited number of spots available in the French immersion program, so if you are interested in registering your child for French Immersion. The class will be filled on a first come, first serve basis.

Lost and Found

The next time you are stopping by the school, please take a moment to check the lost and found to see if    any of the items belong to your child as the lost and found box is becoming very full.  Thank you.

Found at the Omineca Ski Club after the school races were one pair of children’s X-country skiis and             poles.  Please call Winifred Comeau at 692-3470 (w) or 695-6634 (h) to claim them.

School Parking

Please remember when picking up your child from school to pull over to the side of the parking area to         wait rather than out in the middle as this causes traffic to back up and is also dangerous for students             who are running to their vehicles.

PAC Meeting

The next PAC meeting is scheduled for April 24th at 7:00 pm in the computer lab.  Babysitting is provided and all parents are welcome to attend.

Power Outages

When there is a power outage, the first thing we do at MMPS is make sure that all the children are safe.  Next we try to get an accurate picture of how long the power disruption is likely to last.  If it looks like a lengthy outage we consider making arrangements for students to be sent home.  While we regret the loss of instructional time, we send children home because fire alarm systems, public address systems, and heating systems all require power.  In the absence of such safety systems we contact parents, and make arrangements with them to send their children to safe locations.  If we cannot contact some parents to make alternative arrangements students will be kept at school until the end of the regular day and go home in the regular manner.  Students that stay at the school will not have regular classes and are likely to be grouped in a central location.  Teachers and other staff members remain on duty throughout these disruptions to supervise the remaining students and to ensure their safety.  Service outages, like the days our buses don’t run due to road conditions, can be an opportunity for those students who remain in school to get more individual attention from their teachers. Recently there have been a number of power disruptions in and around the Burns Lake area.  Please take the time to make sure the school has all your contact numbers in case of an emergency.

Just a quick reminder to families to remember to wash your hands as often as possible throughout the day
