1 NEWS – from our most recent Board Meeting

On Monday, February 18, 2013, the Board of Education of School District No. 91 (Nechako Lakes) held its Board Meeting via videoconference.

Presentations

The Board heard three presentations from the public, all related to the Vanderhoof schools consultation. Ms. Carrie Smith presented on behalf of the Prairiedale Parent Advisory Council (PAC); Ms. Julie Hodson presented on behalf of the Sinkut View PAC; and, Mr. Craig Smith made a presentation as a concerned parent and member of the public. The Board appreciates the opportunity to hear from the public.

Education Items

Education Presentation

Ms. Michelle Miller-Gauthier, District Literacy Coordinator, made a presentation to the Board regarding our district’s work with the Vancouver Island University Reading Project. This is an excellent opportunity for our teachers to work collaboratively with other teachers in the district and to work with other experts from around the province.

The W.L. McLeod School team is working on an inquiry question that asks “How will a focus on developing oral language through interactive modeling, kinesthetic and visual cues impact literacy skills?” The David Hoy School team’s inquiry question is “How will adjusting our success criteria and increasing modeling improve success in writing?”

Superintendent’s Report

Ms. Seguin, Superintendent of Schools, reported that the second semester has now started in the secondary schools and the transition has been smooth. She also informed the Board “we are now in the middle of Science Fair season.” She has been able to attend the Decker Lake Elementary and Evelyn Dickson Elementary School Science Fairs. “It is exciting to see the depth of learning that takes places as students work on these projects.” The District Science Fair is being held at the Muriel Mould Learning Centre on Wednesday, February 20, 2013.

Ms. Seguin also congratulated Fort St. James Secondary for hosting 11 schools that attended the recent ski and snowboard zone championships. Schools from our district did very well at these championships. In skiing, the LDSS boys placed second and the Fort St. James girls placed first. In snowboarding, the Fort St. James girls placed first and the LDSS girls placed second. On the boys side the LDSS boys placed first.

Fort St. James Secondary and Nechako Valley Secondary Schools are hosting zone basketball tournaments this weekend.

Outdoor Pursuits 11 Course Approved

Mr. Travis Himmelright, a teacher at Nechako Valley Secondary School, presented the new Outdoor Pursuits 11 class that he has prepared. The purpose of the course is to expose students to a variety of outdoor career activities. The Board approved this new course and thanked Mr. Himmelright for his efforts in putting this program together.

Operations Items
Vanderhoof Area Schools Consultation

The Board passed three motions relating to the Vanderhoof area schools consultation process:

  1. The consultation process will last 90 days rather than the 60 days as outlined by Board policy.

  2. The Board will not consider the option of sending grade six students to NVSS.

  3. The Board has indicated that regardless of any decisions they make, no changes will

    take place prior to September 2014.

Babine Elementary-Secondary Facilities Update

Mr. Tim Bancroft, facilities manager, reported that the Babine Elementary-Secondary School renovation project is now to the point where final agreement documents are ready to be signed. This will allow the project to then move to the design phase. Mrs. Darlene Turner, Secretary- Treasurer, thanked Mr. Bancroft for his hard work in moving this project forward.

The Board Gives First Reading to the Amended 2012-2013 Annual Budget

Each February Boards must review their initial budget and make adjustments based on final enrollment figures. Final approval will be sought at a special meeting of the Board on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at 6:00 pm, via videoconference. Once final approval has been received, the amended budget will be submitted to the Ministry of Education.

Board Seeks Input on a Proposed Calendar for 2013-2014

The Board of Education is now seeking input on the proposed 2013-2014 calendar. The calendar begins the first Tuesday after Labour Day, includes a two week spring break, and ends on the last Thursday of June 2014. The calendar will be placed on the District Website and the public will have opportunity to provide input.

Community Garden Approved

The Board of Education has agreed to allow the District of Vanderhoof to use a vacant piece of school district property for a community garden project. The Board is pleased to be able to work together with the community on this project.
