SCHOLARSHIPS/BURSARIES FOR ABORIGINAL STUDENTS

The Alliance Pipeline Aboriginal Student Awards
Program provides aboriginal students with
financial assistance to pursue post-secondary
education and prepare them for employment in the
oil and gas industry. The award is for a one year
period and will cover the cost of tuition, books
and supplies to a maximum of $4,000 per academic
year. Open to residents of British Columbia,
Alberta or Saskatchewan and enrolled in, or have
applied to, a technical school, college or
university in a program relevant to the oil and
gas industry.

The establishment of the Aboriginal Veterans
Scholarship Trust will forever enshrine the
contributions made by Aboriginal veterans in the
defense of Canada. Under the management of the
National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation,
interest from the trust will provide Aboriginal
youth with the opportunity to pursue a university
education in all areas related to economic
development and self-government.

Launched in 1992 to assist Aboriginal students
achieve post secondary education, and provide an
opportunity for Royal Bank to strengthen its
relationship with the Native community. All
status Indians, non-status Indians, Inuit, or
Metis are eligible to apply. Each year, five
students will receive $4,000.00 annually for
their education expenses, to a maximum of four
years at university or two years at college, in
disciplines related (but not restricted) to the
Financial Industry. To be eligible applications
must be received at Royal Bank by January 31st of

Canadian National Railways offers five
scholarships of $1,500 to Aboriginal students
enrolled full-time in a college or university
program. Students must have a good academic
record and intend to prepare for a career in the
transportation industry. Deadline: June 30.

Eight Xerox Aboriginal Scholarships, each worth $3,000,
will be awarded to Aboriginal students enrolled
in post-secondary school programs related to the
information technology industry. Each
scholarship is awarded for one year. For award
recipients to continue to receive an annual
scholarship after the first year, they must
reapply annually to a maximum of four years for
Canadian university programs and three years for
Canadian community college programs. (Contributions

The CanWest Global System Broadcasters of the
Future Awards are a series of scholarship,
internship and mentorship programs designed to
encourage and aid talented and enthusiastic
Canadians in establishing or furthering careers
in the Canadian broadcast industry. These annual
internships offer an Aboriginal Canadian a
challenging opportunity to work in private
television, in pursuit of a career in
broadcasting. The award recipient is placed in a
four-month internship program at either the
Global Television Network in Don Mills (Toronto),
Ontario, or STV-Regina in Regina, Saskatchewan,
where the recipient will be paid on a salary
basis for the summer.

Open to Aboriginal students pursuing studies
leading to a degree, diploma or certificate in
Engineering, Geology/geophysics, Commerce,
Computer science, Technology or Administrative
studies. One annual award of $2,000. Based
on academic achievement and financial need.

Four new bursaries of $3,000 each are made
available yearly to Inuit, Métis, Status Indian
or Non-Status Indian people in need of financial
assistance who have resided in British Columbia,
Alberta or Saskatchewan for at least one year
immediately before applying for the award. Most
programs leading to a degree or diploma at
recognized Canadian universities, technical
institutes or community colleges are eligible.
However, emphasis is placed on those programs
that prepare students for a career in the oil and
gas industry. Preference will be given to
applicants who have been admitted into post-secondary
programs. Award winners will be granted a bursary
until the completion of their program, i.e., two
years for a college/technical school diploma,
four years for a university degree, provided the
studies continue. Application Deadline: June 15

For Status Indian, Non-Status Indian, Inuit or Métis
applicants enrolled in a post-secondary program
that is relevant to the petroleum industry and
leads to a diploma or degree. $3,500 for college
or technical training. $4,500 for university
training. A resident of British Columbia,
Alberta, Saskatchewan, the Yukon or the Northwest
Territories for at least one year immediately
before applying for the award. Attending a
university, college or technical institute in
British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, the

The National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation (NAAF)
offers numerous awards for Aboriginal
students pursuing a post-secondary education.
In 2000-2001 alone, the National Aboriginal
Achievement Foundation provided 1.77 million to

Educational Awards Program For Native People

Offered annually to full-time, post-secondary
students of Canadian Indian or Inuit ancestry
pursuing studies in disciplines applicable to the
oil and gas industry. Awards are based on
financial need, academic performance and
potential, the appropriateness of the discipline
of studies to industry, and future aspirations.

enrolled in a school located in Canada may apply.
Students must demonstrate serious interest in
furthering their educational and career
development. 52 bursaries of $750.00 each will be
awarded to high school students (from grade 9 and
up), aged 13 18. 40 scholarships of $2000.00
pr $2500.00 will be awarded to full time students
enrolled in college, university, or technical
institute. Sixteen of these scholarships
are available only to students enrolled in a
commerce or business administration program,

Scholarships are awarded twice a year; the first

Ten $500 scholarship bursaries are awarded
to Aboriginal students selected from the twenty-five

The Native Womens Association of Canada is
pleased to offer the above mentioned student
awards. Two awards valued at $1,000 each will be
awarded to two aboriginal women of the First
Nations/Metis descent. To be eligible for the
award you must be pursuing post-secondary
studies, or just completing your studies and have
demonstrated a commitment to improving the
situation of aboriginal women either politically,

The Canada Trust
"Partnership For Youth" Scholarship

The Canada Trust Scholarship is to financially
assist Aboriginal post-secondary students for
books, tuition or housing during the academic
year. Those eligible must be students or
returning students of Canada. Applicants must be
enrolled and accepted in a first, second or third
year college or university program. Consideration
will be given to those who are contributing to
their community by volunteering or providing a
leadership role for their peers.

The purpose of this program is to assist B.C.
First Nations people in completing post-secondary
education. Upon application, a student bursary
will be considered for First Nations people
enrolled in recognized BC post-secondary
institutions. The size of the bursary will be
determined by need and will reflect the amount of
assistance received from other sources. The
maximum level of assistance is $700/year for
funded students and $2,000/year for non-funded

These awards are for First Nations citizens at
the post-secondary student level who have
completed at least one year of post-secondary

Bursaries are available through the Bill and
Elsie More First Nations Bursary Fund of the
Vancouver Foundation to assist First Nations
students attending any university or college in
British Columbia. Approximately $1,000 is divided
among the successful candidates, and amounts are

Nations: Calverly Estate Scholarship Fund

Applicants must be ACTIVE members of the United
Native Nations local in their area, or be active
in their individual community toward the
betterment of Aboriginal peoples. Applicants must
plan to use the scholarship funds for the purpose
of continuing their education, preferably with
the plans to work in the future for the
betterment of First Nations causes. Two $500 and
four $300 bursaries will be awarded per term.
Applicants must be non-status. Grants will be
made twice yearly: the second week of December

Scholarship - Aboriginal Nurses Association Of
Canada

To encourage nurses of Aboriginal ancestry who
intend to serve in isolated northern Aboriginal
communities by helping them obtain the
specialized knowledge they will require. Two
awards of $5,000 each. May be a student enrolled
in a bachelor-level nursing program. May also be
a student graduating from a registered nursing
course or a graduate nurse already serving in an
isolated community who has been accepted for
further study in: Community health nursing,

Special Bursary For Aboriginal Medical Students

To help address inequalities in the health status
of Canadas Aboriginal people and provide
financial support during medical training.
Provides a maximum of $4,000 per academic year to

also receive membership in the CMA, the relevant
provincial/territorial division of CMA and the
