This is not an exhaustive list.  There is much more information available once you start looking. 

Scholarships are based on academic excellence.

Bursaries are non-repayable grants awarded primarily on the basis of need.

SPECIFIC SCHOLARSHIPS/BURSARIES FOR ABORIGINAL STUDENTS

Alliance Pipeline Aboriginal Student Awards Program

v      The Alliance Pipeline Aboriginal Student Awards Program provides aboriginal students with financial assistance to pursue post-secondary education and prepare them for employment in the oil and gas industry. The award is for a one year period and will cover the cost of tuition, books and supplies to a maximum of $4,000 per academic year. Open to residents of British Columbia, Alberta or Saskatchewan and enrolled in, or have applied to, a technical school, college or university in a program relevant to the oil and gas industry.

Aboriginal Veterans Scholarship Trust

v      The establishment of the Aboriginal Veterans Scholarship Trust will forever enshrine the contributions made by Aboriginal veterans in the defense of Canada. Under the management of the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation, interest from the trust will provide Aboriginal youth with the opportunity to pursue a university education in all areas related to economic development and self-government.

Royal Bank Native Student Awards Program 

v      Launched in 1992 to assist Aboriginal students achieve post secondary education, and provide an opportunity for Royal Bank to strengthen its relationship with the Native community. All status Indians, non-status Indians, Inuit, or Metis are eligible to apply. Each year, five students will receive $4,000.00 annually for their education expenses, to a maximum of four years at university or two years at college, in disciplines related (but not restricted) to the Financial Industry. To be eligible applications must be received at Royal Bank by January 31st of each year. (Royal Bank Plaza, 11th Floor, North Tower, 200 Bay Street, Toronto, Ontario M5J 2J5)

Canadian National Native Awards Program

v      Canadian National Railways offers five scholarships of $1,500 to Aboriginal students enrolled full-time in a college or university program.  Students must have a good academic record and intend to prepare for a career in the transportation industry.  Deadline: June 30. Xerox Aboriginal Scholarship Program

v      Eight Xerox Aboriginal Scholarships, each worth $3,000, will be awarded to Aboriginal students enrolled in post-secondary school programs related to the information technology industry.  Each scholarship is awarded for one year. For award recipients to continue to receive an annual scholarship after the first year, they must reapply annually to a maximum of four years for Canadian university programs and three years for Canadian community college programs. Broadcasters Of The Future Awards: Aboriginal Peoples’ Internship Award

v      The CanWest Global System Broadcasters of the Future Awards are a series of scholarship, internship and mentorship programs designed to encourage and aid talented and enthusiastic Canadians in establishing or furthering careers in the Canadian broadcast industry. These annual internships offer an Aboriginal Canadian a challenging opportunity to work in private television, in pursuit of a career in broadcasting. The award recipient is placed in a four-month internship program at either the Global Television Network in Don Mills (Toronto), Ontario, or STV-Regina in Regina, Saskatchewan, where the recipient will be paid on a salary basis for the summer.

Home Oil Company Limited Aboriginal Scholarship Program

v      Open to Aboriginal students pursuing studies leading to a degree, diploma or certificate in Engineering, Geology/geophysics, Commerce, Computer science, Technology or Administrative studies. One annual award of $2,000.  Based on academic achievement and financial need. Application Deadline: August 31 of each year. Education Awards Program For Native People – Husky Oil

v      Four new bursaries of $3,000 each are made available yearly to Inuit, Métis, Status Indian or Non-Status Indian people in need of financial assistance who have resided in British Columbia, Alberta or Saskatchewan for at least one year immediately before applying for the award. Most programs leading to a degree or diploma at recognized Canadian universities, technical institutes or community colleges are eligible. However, emphasis is placed on those programs that prepare students for a career in the oil and gas industry. Preference will be given to applicants who have been admitted into post-secondary programs. Award winners will be granted a bursary until the completion of their program, i.e., two years for a college/technical school diploma, four years for a university degree, provided the studies continue. Native Educational Awards Program - Imperial Oil Limited

v      For Status Indian, Non-Status Indian, Inuit or Métis applicants enrolled in a post-secondary program that is relevant to the petroleum industry and leads to a diploma or degree. $3,500 for college or technical training. $4,500 for university training. A resident of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, the Yukon or the Northwest Territories for at least one year immediately before applying for the award. Attending a university, college or technical institute in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, the Yukon or the Northwest Territories. Application Deadline: June 15 of each year. National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation

v      The National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation (NAAF) offers numerous awards for Aboriginal students pursuing a post-secondary education.  In 2000-2001 alone, the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation provided 1.77 million to Aboriginal students.  (National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation, 70 Yorkville Avenue, Suite 33A, Toronto, Ontario M5R 1B9)

Petro-Canada Educational Awards Program For Native People

v      Offered annually to full-time, post-secondary students of Canadian Indian or Inuit ancestry pursuing studies in disciplines applicable to the oil and gas industry.  Awards are based on financial need, academic performance and potential, the appropriateness of the discipline of studies to industry, and future aspirations. Up to five awards of a maximum of $5000.00. June 15.  (Petro-Canada Native Education Awards, P.O. Box 2844, Calgary, Alberta T2P 3E3)

CaNative Housing Corporation Aboriginal Bursaries

v      For graduate or undergraduate student of Native Canadian Ancestry. Student must be able to demonstrate involvement in the preservation of traditional culture. Amount: $5000.00. Deadline: January 15, 2000. (Native Student Services, 2-400 Students’ Union Building, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta T6G 2J7)

Foundation for the Advancement of Aboriginal Youth – Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business                   

v      Aboriginal students who are Canadian Citizens enrolled in a school located in Canada may apply.  Students must demonstrate serious interest in furthering their educational and career development. 52 bursaries of $750.00 each will be awarded to high school students (from grade 9 and up), aged 13 – 18. 40 scholarships of $2000.00 pr $2500.00 will be awarded to full time students enrolled in college, university, or technical institute.  Sixteen of these scholarships are available only to students enrolled in a commerce or business administration program, including MBA. KPMG Aboriginal Student Awards Program               

v      Canadian citizen; Status Indian, on-Status Indian, Inuit, or Metis; full-time student who is currently enrolled in, or has been accepted to, a university or community college; pursuing studies in business or accounting. Four awards of $2000.00 each. Deadline: June 30. (KPMG Aboriginal Student Awards Program Coordinator, KPMG. 40 King Street West, Suite 5400, Toronto, Ontario, M5H 3Z2)

TD Financial Group and First Nations Bank of Canada Aboriginal Education Awards                       

v      For those with Canadian resident status or non-status Indian, Metis, or Inuit who are a full-time student at a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution. Pursuing a program relevant to the banking industry such as business, economics, computer science, math, and sciences In need of financial assistance to further your educational goals. Five awards of $1000.00 each. Deadline: March 31.  (Award Coordinator C/O Human Resources Department, TD and First Nations Bank of Canada, 201 Portage Avenue, Suite 222, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3B 3N4)

Association of First Nations Women Scholarship

v      Scholarships are awarded twice a year; the first award during the fall session of the academic year and the second during the spring session of the academic year. The successful applicants must be of First Nations ancestry and be registered as full-time students at a post-secondary institution.  (Association of First Nations Women, #1 - 245 East Broadway, Vancouver, B.C. BCR Group of Companies Aboriginal Scholarship Program

v      Ten  $500 scholarship bursaries are awarded to Aboriginal students selected from the twenty-five First Nations along the BC Rail system who have completed one year of a full time post secondary education. Successful applicants are those who have demonstrated a good academic standing, a balanced lifestyle, have excellent communication skills, and be innovative. Corbiere-Lavell/Two-Axe Early Award

v      The Native Women’s Association of Canada is pleased to offer the above mentioned student awards. Two awards valued at $1,000 each will be awarded to two aboriginal women of the First Nations/Metis descent. To be eligible for the award you must be pursuing post-secondary studies, or just completing your studies and have demonstrated a commitment to improving the situation of aboriginal women either politically, culturally, economically or otherwise. The Canada Trust "Partnership For Youth" Scholarship               

v      The Canada Trust Scholarship is to financially assist Aboriginal post-secondary students for books, tuition or housing during the academic year. Those eligible must be students or returning students of Canada. Applicants must be enrolled and accepted in a first, second or third year college or university program. Consideration will be given to those who are contributing to their community by volunteering or providing a leadership role for their peers.

First Citizens’ Fund Student Bursary Program

v      The purpose of this program is to assist B.C. First Nations people in completing post-secondary education. Upon application, a student bursary will be considered for First Nations people enrolled in recognized BC post-secondary institutions. The size of the bursary will be determined by need and will reflect the amount of assistance received from other sources. The maximum level of assistance is $700/year for funded students and $2,000/year for non-funded students. Heroes of Our Time Awards – Assembly of First Nations

v      These are seven Memorial Awards at $2,000 each. These awards are for First Nations citizens at the post-secondary student level who have completed at least one year of post-secondary education and have demonstrated exceptional academic abilities. Applicant must be of Aboriginal ancestry and actively involved within the First Nation community. Mungo Martin Memorial Awards

v      Ten to fifteen awards of $200 to $500 are given annually, based on the number of successful applicants. Applicants must be of First Nations ancestry and a full-time student. Deadline is August 1. (President, Mungo Martin Memorial Awards Society, Box 883, Qualicum Beach, B.C. V9K 1T2)

Bill and Elsie More First Nations Bursary

v      Bursaries are available through the Bill and Elsie More First Nations Bursary Fund of the Vancouver Foundation to assist First Nations students attending any university or college in British Columbia. Approximately $1,000 is divided among the successful candidates, and amounts are based on need. United Native Nations: Calverly Estate Scholarship Fund

v      Applicants must be ACTIVE members of the United Native Nations local in their area, or be active in their individual community toward the betterment of Aboriginal peoples. Applicants must plan to use the scholarship funds for the purpose of continuing their education, preferably with the plans to work in the future for the betterment of First Nations causes. Two $500 and four $300 bursaries will be awarded per term. Applicants must be non-status. Grants will be made twice yearly: the second week of December and the second week of August. Baxter Corporation Jean Goodwill Scholarship - Aboriginal Nurses Association Of Canada

v      To encourage nurses of Aboriginal ancestry who intend to serve in isolated northern Aboriginal communities by helping them obtain the specialized knowledge they will require. Two awards of $5,000 each. May be a student enrolled in a bachelor-level nursing program. May also be a student graduating from a registered nursing course or a graduate nurse already serving in an isolated community who has been accepted for further study in: Community health nursing, Outpost nursing or Midwifery. Canadian Native Arts Foundation                                    

v      To assist with private instruction, attending special seminars, educational events, tuition and expenses related to the applicant’s education, including art supplies, costumes and equipment. British Columbia Hydro And Power Authority Aboriginal Scholarship Program

v      To encourage and financially assist Aboriginal people to pursue post-secondary education in disciplines relevant to BC Hydro and, where possible, to provide recipients with work experience. Scholarships are offered to individuals who are status/non-status Indians, Inuit or Metis who are residents of BC and who plan to enrol in or who are attending a public post-secondary institution in any field of study. CMA Special Bursary For Aboriginal Medical Students

v      To help address inequalities in the health status of Canada’s Aboriginal people and provide financial support during medical training. Provides a maximum of $4,000 per academic year to each successful applicant. Bursary recipients also receive membership in the CMA, the relevant provincial/territorial division of CMA and the Native Physicians Association in Canada. Gil Purcell Memorial Journalism Scholarship - The Canadian Press

v      One scholarship of $4,000 for a Native person studying journalism. (Manager of Human Resources, Canadian Press, 36 King Street East, Toronto, Ontario M5C 2L9)                    

Robert Allison Bursary For Non-Status Indians - Okanagan University College

v      Enables deserving students to begin or continue attendance at Okanagan University College. Applicant’s circumstances make it necessary to be self-supporting. Stephen Palmu Memorial Scholarship

v      Initial preference to a Native student from anywhere in British Columbia pursuing a degree in any department at Simon Fraser University. One award of $100. (Financial Assistance, 3017 Academic Quadrangle, Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia V5A 1S6)

Chiefs' Health Careers Initiative Scholarship / Bursary Program

v      To encourage students of Aboriginal ancestry who wish to pursue educational opportunities leading to careers in the health professions. To ensure equity in distribution, every effort will be made to ensure regional/geographic location of applicants is considered. The Chiefs' Health Careers Initiative is committed to supporting as many students as possible; therefore scholarship allocations will be up to a maximum of $1,000.00 and bursary allocations will be up to a maximum of $2,500.00.
