Bus Service Criteria

We have established criteria that will meet Board Policies and be applied in a fair and consistent manner throughout the District

We understand that there will always be exceptions no matter how successful we are. Each exception would have to be reviewed on an individual basis, based on its own merit.

The criteria we apply can be summarized as follows:
All bus routes must be suitable for year round travel. We travel on 3 types of roads. we adjust bus stops as follows:

  • Main highways (heavy traffic/high speed) 1km between stops
  • Primary roads (lighter traffic/reduced speed) 0.5km between stops
  • Secondary roads, usually gravel (minimal traffic/slow speed) Students within 2.5k of the primary road will be required to meet the bus at the primary road.
  • Students within 2.5 km of their catchment school will only be picked up if it can be done at no additional cost, space is available and does not unduly delay the bus.

Students not attending their catchment school will only be picked up if it can be done at no additional cost; space is available and does not unduly delay the bus. Student beyond 2.5km of their catchment area school will only be picked up if:

  • The road is suitable for a bus, and there is an approved turn around location within 0.5 KM of the stop and,
  • The cost does not exceed the cost of "Transportation Assistance" (if eligible)

Note: Students may only register from one primary residence

Cross Boundary & Courtesy Riders

The Board of Education, expects that students will attend the district school in their catchment area, but also recognizes that parents may choose another school in the district. Transportation for students not attending their catchment area school shall be the responsibility of parents. Students may ride on regular school bus routes where space is available.

Cross Boundary Rider: student attending a school outside of their catchment area school.
A student living within walking distance (2.5km) may be provided transportation. There has to be space available on existing bus routes and it cannot unduly delay the schedule of the bus.

Courtesy rider: student being transported that are attending a district school; student living within the established walk limits (2.5km); student being transported on a different bus other than their designated bus.

The priority for providing transportation to students who live within walk limits will be based on the following: ill health or temporary handicap; safety.

In the event of ill health or temporary handicap, authorization will be given by the Transportation Coordinator upon receipt of a request from the parents, substantiated by a medical certificate, which should state the expected length of the ill health or temporary handicap.

Transportation for students not attending their catchment area school shall be the responsibility of parents. Students may ride on regular school bus routes where space is available.

The privilege of students riding within the walk limits may be discontinued at any time.

Requests for "courtesy or cross boundary" transportation must be submitted each year. Although every effort is made to expedite processing, these requests may not be processed until the end of September. Until processing is complete and approval is given, parents are responsible for transporting their child/children to school. If your child/children are either a cross boundary or courtesy rider and you would like to request transportation for the current school year, please do so in writing and send to Transportation Manager.
