Teacher and this project

It is acknowledged that this site needs to be delivered under the direction of the teacher, particularly the page on "the Environment". Skills and vocabulary such as longitude, latitude, continents and physical features are concepts that students require guided instruction to accomplish. The remaining pages can be delivered as independent research or resource assignments.

Following is a partial list of current curriculum values that are addressed throughout. These elements can be used together or independently to address curriculum goals. The site was designed to be accessed in its entirety, but all pages can stand alone to address specific goals.

This site focuses upon three aspects of social studies goals with regard to First Nations of the Pacific Northwest Coast:

  • environment
  • society and culture
  • economy and technology.

An area that is not addressed is the historical and contemporary political component of First Nations. As an extension to compliment the site, it may be worthwhile to investigate a timeline of historical contact. The NISGA'A TIMELINE is provided from the Nisga's Treaty, and is of interest when addressing this curricular goal. The interaction with explorers is also not extensively developed. I suggest investigating the sites listed in the "Web resources" page for additional links.

It is encouraged that other aspects of curriculum goals be approached in similar or alternate modes as most but not all learners are comfortable using technology. It is a focus of this site to address the issue of student use with technology by integrating it with curriculum. Many of the sites listed in the "Web resources" page include links to other First Nations groups. The richness of the cultures and the political processes of contemporary issues are addressed in many of these sites.

Processes to consider by students and teachers will be:
  1. the manner that the investigation is to be carried out; by individuals, partners or small groups
  2. the way that the collected information is presented
    • in the form of question and answer, or as a research project to be developed as:
      • a word processor or Power Point document
      • an html site
      • a hyperstudio project
      • any other format that the teacher and student feel is relevant.
Evaluation of the project or students work:
  1. needs to develop with consideration for the format of the response project
  2. should consider:
    • language skills such as spelling, sentence structure and editing
    • use of resources from the site, from external internet sources or any other source
    • organization and presentation of the final project
    • when used collaboratively, marks could be given for the process of sharing resources, developing a plan, and working together.
Fundamentals of online project delivery are:
  1. that technology be used as an integral part of curriculum delivery
  2. that resources are available outside the "building" of the school site and specifically to be found and investigated online
  3. that presentation is developed by using one of several computer based applications
  4. that access is not limited by site or use but can be used at school, at home or wherever or whenever an online connection is available.
S.S. Curriculum Goals (a partial list embedded into this site). For additional goals go to the BC INTEGRATED RESOURCE PACKAGE 1998 at Appendix A - Grade 4 at http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/irp/ssk7/apa4.htm
